A cake smash is a hilarious milestone in your baby's first year, the first and possibly only time it's okay to get messy and sticky with a cake!
First, we take some photos in a birthday outfit. A lovely dress, a tutu, a smart suit, a sentimental outfit or just keep it simple. If we are quick your one-year-old could wear two outfits. I have plenty of birthday hats and headbands to borrow for this part of the session. Then, we break out the fake cakes and introduce any items you bring from home.
After that, we unpack the cake, change baby into a tutu, or a diaper cover and begin the smash.
When it comes to what cake to choose, keep it cheap, small and simple. A large cupcake or a six-inch cake is big enough. Three hours before you session pull the cake out of the fridge, so it is easier for baby to smash. Try and avoid super-colorful frosting, often baby gets enthusiastic, and starts flinging frosting everywhere and mom is first in the line of fire! Frosting has reached the ceiling, the walls and I once took a fist full of frosting to the forehead, so wear an old top or sweats.
After the cake has surrendered, we swiftly remove baby from the scene of the crime to the bathroom where there is warm water and towels. Don't worry about cleaning up, that's my job!
It is hard to say how baby will react to the cake and session. Some love the sugar and being the center of attention, some don't. Some think the frosting is cold, sticky and gross and the whole thing is a ridiculous idea, and some are absolutely beside themselves in glee. Most kids are kind of curious at first and that is when I get most of the photos. Then we have time to wait and see what happens.
These sessions are $150. Your photos are put on a USB. You can bring one of your own or purchase one from me for $10.
